We would like to thank all the governmental and private organizations of Elazig for their great help during the observation of the 11 August 1999 total solar eclipse and to people of Elazig for their hospitality. |
The following pages are to be dedicated to the people who have lost their lives during the Marmara earthquake. |
OBSERVERS:
The beginning of July was the time at which few days were left for the 1999 solar total eclipse. All preparations in Istanbul were completed at the end of July. The observation equipment's were carried to Elazig by bus on August, 2. Our eclipse team met the Italian and the Slovakian teams at Yesilkoy airport on August 3. The group had a nice flight and arrived in Elazig in the evening. The temperature at the time of arrival was found to be above the normal value. We had been in Elazig in the previous years and had not observed such a high temperature.
It was seen easily that the people of Elazig had been already prepared well. We moved to the sugar factory guest house where we would spend the rest of the week. The next day having started the preparations for the eclipse, we went to Harput with the Japanese team. We would share this previously assigned observation park with the other scientific teams. Each team started their preparations as soon as their working areas were shown.
Every day, our team left the guest house early in the morning, continued the preparations till the noon time which was terribly hot and then came back to the guest house for lunch break. We were going back to Harput after a short break. Preparations were going on and nothing unusual had occurred until August 6 when we noticed the clouds in the west horizon. Precautions were taken for a probable rain shower. No rain fall was seen in the observation park although centrum of Elazig and sugar factory have suffered heavy rain.
Our observation park was getting more crowded with the new professional observers which arrived. Excitement had reached a climax when we had two days left for the great event, but clouds reappeared on August 9, when the last trials were carried out. Appearance of theseclouds just at the time of totality made us feel highly disappointed. Hesitation of whether to go to Diyarbakir or not, come to an end as state meteorological and internet weather forecasts promised sunny weather for August 11.
Finally we had the great day for which we had been prepared for three years. We were ready to take photographs and concluded our experimental research. Some photographs for different phases of the eclipse are published below.KANDILLI OBSERVATORY, ECLIPSE TEAM
